| History of the Barony |
|
In the beginning Raymond the Mild and Sheen of Ire came to Olympia from the lands above the great Bay of St. Francis. There they founded the Barony of Madrone; there, on May 3, A.S. V, was held the first official event in the land we know as An Tir. Raymond and Sheen soon moved still further north, to a place the native barbarians called Seattle. There our founding Baron and Baroness planted Madrone, and there it is rooted to this day.
Upon the 20th day of June of that year, Madrone hosted a combined Baronial Tourney in cooperation with the Barony of Three Mountains: the first official event in which Three Mountains took part. A.S. VI saw the publication of the first issue of the Crier – at first a Madrone newsletter -– in October, edited by Nyneve and Roger the Goliard, and printed upon a single sheet.
After this Baron Raymond and Baroness Sheen journeyed south, to the land whence they had come. Bereft of their ruler, the citizens of Madrone asked Liam of the Barque to be their castellaine, and rule in Baron Raymond's absence. Liam agreed to it, and on the 29th of October, A.S. VII, he founded the Order of the Red Branch, and named Nyneve its first member.
On the 27th day of May, A.S. VIII, Madrone hosted the Royal Tourney of Union. There Paul and Carol of Bellatrix, King and Queen of the West, joined the Baronies of Madrone and Three Mountains into the Principality of An Tir, and gave Madrone its charter. Madrone's Fallshire Renaissance Fare was the scene of the first Coronet Tourney of An Tir on August 25. On September 7-8, A.S. IX, Madrone again hosted an An Tir Coronet Tourney. King Douglas and Queen Lorna attended, and were presented with a petition: the people of Madrone, long without a Baron, craved their Majesties indulgence in giving them a new one. Their Majesties obliged, creating Liam of the Barque and Dierdre Muldomhnaigh Baron and Baroness in Madrone.
In A.S. X, on the 4th-6th days of July, the first session of the University of Madrone was held. Then Prince Edward Zifran proclaimed that Coronet Tourneys and Coronations would be held separately; and Madrone, so often first in An Tir, hosted the first An Tir Twelfth Night Coronation, on January 3. A session of the University of Madrone was held that same weekend; and the University was renamed the University of Ithra, and given a charter.
'Twas that year that the Rebellion was born – the clarion call that was to sound throughout the fabled realms, protesting the tyranny of the B.O.D. and seeking our independence from our one-time protector, the Kingdom of the West. The following year Baron Liam and Baroness Dierdre decided to resign – and subsequently became well-known members of the Rebel Alliance. At Lupercalia, in February, Theodulf of Borogrove and Anne of Caerdydd were named Baron and Baroness of Madrone.
On the 16th day of July, A.S. XII, Madrone held the first Serjeant-at-Arms tourney. Seamus Mac Curaidh of Glenerochaid passed all tests to become Madrone's first Serjeant-at-Arms.
Twelfth Night A.S. XII was a scene of unrest and rebellion. Rebels and royalists met in Madrone; Western peers stalked the halls. But An Tir was divided, and independence not so easily won. Years passed. In July A.S. XVI, Liam of the Barque died unexpectedly, and was mourned throughout An Tir. Only a few months later, Madrone was host to the Twelfth Night Coronation of Manfred Kriegstriber and Morag Campbell of Glenbourne as the first King and Queen of the Kingdom of An Tir.
In November A.S. XIX, Baron Theodulf and Baroness Anne retired. King Berek and Queen Liesel made Frederick the Red and Delane the Forgotten the fourth Baron and Baroness in Madrone. They served Madrone until July A.S. XXI, when Lee of the Lowlands and Anastasia Alexandrovna Andreeva stepped up as fifth Baron and Baroness in Madrone.
In the following years, many gentles living in the eastern reaches of the Barony began to tire of making the long voyage across the lake to gather with their fellows. They began to organize a canton in the summer of A.S. XXV, and the first Wintersfeast was held in December. The gentles of the canton began a tradition of meeting monthly to share skills. At the Baronial Banquet in February A.S. XXVII, the Canton of Porte de l'Eau was made official by the word of King Barak and Queen Lao.
At the Council of the Crowns in June of A.S. XXIX, Lee (now Vladimir) and Anastasia resigned as Baron and Baroness. Viscountess Fiona di Varanus was named Castellan to govern the Barony as the populace met to discuss its direction and leadership. At the following Twelfth Night in Madrone, King Rorik and Queen Berengaria invested Trahaearn ap Ieuan and Janelyn of Fenmere as sixth Baron and Baroness in Madrone.
Gentles in the southern reaches of the Barony also began organizing and at the South Sound Unity Tourney in July of A.S. XXX, Their Majesties Hwulf and Luise recognized the incipient Canton of Wyebridge. Famed for their archers and herbalists, their efforts however failed to prevent the loss of their name to the heralds, and the canton was tentatively renamed Wyewood.
In A.S. XX, Baron Trahaearn and Baroness Janelyn asked to step down from their duties to resume other pursuits. At Twelfth Night A.S. XXXIII, King Aveloc and Queen Laurellin invested Sir Timothy ap Caradoc and Tierzah Nic Cathal as seventh Baron and Baroness of Madrone.
Renowned for his own martial prowess, Baron Timm saw fit to create the order of the Gwraidd to recognize important contributors to the martial arts within the Barony. Yvon Maurice Charon, now known as Don Balthazar Yvon Charon, was the first to receive the garter that is the symbol of this honor. Also during the stewardship of Baron Timm and Baroness Tirzah, the canton of Wyewood asked for and was granted their independence. The new and vital shire of Wyewood was granted full status by King Davin and Queen Groa at Lionhearts Tourney in A.S. XXXVI, and Earl Cire and Countess Elisabeth were installed as Patrons.
When Baron Timm and Baroness Tierzah announced their intention to resume their quiet and peaceful private lives, King Aveloc and Queen Maliqua invested Sir Fiach CuCool Feardri Ulfredsson and Maitresse Anne-Marie d'Ailleurs as eighth baron and baroness of Madrone at Twelfth Night A.S. XXXVI.
As both are proponents of authenticity and persona development, Baron Fiach and Baroness Anne-Marie created the Poisson d'Or to recognize those who aid persona development in others: Cainder nic Seanlaoich was made the premiere of this award at Lionhearts Tourney A.S XXXVIII.
After a period of peace and prosperity, Baron Fiach and Baroness Anne-Marie asked the Crown to find new heads of state for the Barony. At Lionhearts Tournament in A.S. XXXIX, King Skapti and Queen Asa invested Viscount Ragnarr Thorwaldsson and Bergdis Thorgrimsdottir as ninth Baron and Baroness of the great barony of Madrone, ushering in what promises to be a bright and glorious future.
